James P. Boyce ~ A Brief Catechism of Bible Doctrine
Title: A Brief Catechism of Bible Doctrine.
Author: James P. Boyce 1827-1888
Original Publish Date: 1885
James Petigru Boyce (1827—1888) was a son of privilege who became a servant of Christ. Born to Southern royalty, he was educated at the best schools, afforded every advantage, and groomed to take over the family empire—until Jesus changed everything by changing his heart.
While faithful in Fifth Commandment duties, Boyce turned his back on a life of culture to pursue the work of a minister of the gospel. He served as a pastor and editor. The Spirit of God made him into an effective preacher, one who could affect his hearers powerfully, and the Southern Baptist Convention eventually called him to serve as a founding professor at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Boyce would go on to teach theology and serve as president at SBTS for the rest of his life. Shortly before his death, he committed his classroom notes to print in his classic Abstract of Systematic Theology. Ever the churchman, he was equally concerned for both pulpit and pew; that concern prompted the volume you now hold, A Brief Catechism of Bible Doctrine.
This small catechism is simple, but not simplistic; given its brevity, it is unexpectedly full and surprisingly robust. To employ a faithful tool such as Boyce’s Brief Catechism can help your family and church to grow in the knowledge of God and his precious word.
